Hey Visionaries! Ever heard the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover?” Well unfortunately, you and I both know THAT PEOPLE DONT EVER FOLLOW THAT.
I get a lot of questions in regards to book covers and so in this article, I want to give you a couple of things that you may want to pay close attention to when designing your book cover for success. Remember this is the first thing that people see. Your book cover is what determines in most cases is somebody chooses to buy your book or not. It’s very important that you keep this in mind at all times and not forget that your book cover is everything!
In this article, I talked about four major elements to your book cover. These four major elements that you want to spend time on are your book title, cover image, book summary and contact information. If you would like me to evaluate your book cover you are always welcome to schedule a strategy session by going to www.visionstrategysession.com
Your Book Title should catch the eye of your reader
When it comes to your book title, please remember that this is most definitely the first thing that your potential reader is going to look for. There are two major parts to your book title that you most definitely want to make sure you take advantage of. You have your main title which that is going to be the first thing that people see. This is going to be the part of your title that is bigger and stands out. There are different elements to creating an incredible title that you want to keep in mind. 6 kinds of titles I would recommend would be surprising/controversial, funny, one word, poetic, thought-provoking and/or whimsical.
The next portion of your book title is the subtitle. Now the subtitle is designed to tell the reader what they’re going to get as a result of reading the book. There is a portion of my S.Y.S.T.E.M. Mastery training where I teach on designing your unique selling proposition. In this training of identifying your unique selling proposition, there is a part where we discuss what is the challenge your customer has and how do you help to solve it? This is also a great place for your subtitle. Give your read a promise. Something that is designed to hook them to read. … Steps to something, How to …, When to… etc etc. This is honestly, in my opinion, more just as important as the title.
The title grabs the attention and your subtitle keeps them interested.
People judge books by its cover
So now that you’ve grabbed the attention of your potential reader, the next thing they’re going to look at is the cover. Your cover has to be professional. I see so many authors who totally missed this one. Trying to cut corners and getting unprofessional covers done is a sure way to lose value in your book.
Before I move forward and giving you additional tips on your cover let me just remind you that 70% of most people who will buy your book will not read the book but if you’re cover is a Flawless piece of work, when they see it it will always catch their attention to one to read it.
Okay now tips on having an incredible cover. Make sure that if you choose to have your own image on the front that it is done with a professional camera. You would think that that is a known but honestly it is not. If you use anything other than a professional camera you’re going to end up with a fuzzy looking picture that is definitely not going to capture a reader. Now some people will ask me should I have my picture on the front or not. I would say if it is a success book and your goal is to acquire coaching or speaking opportunities then I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with you representing yourself on the cover of the book. However, in some situations, it may be best to have an image of something else. I know me personally I like having my picture on the front of my books period however for certain books like my public speaking book or my writing a book I do not have my picture on the front but I do have it on the back. Again it just depends on the topic.
Now for images, if you choose to use an image make sure again just like with your picture is a quality image. There are many places where you can get incredible stock photos and if you hire a designer in most cases they will also know where to go. Me I personally like to leave the images and design to my designers. I’m going to have an additional article where I’ll teach you how to find the best designer for your book cover and different tools that I have used in the past.
If there’s one major thing that I will say about the imagery of your book is that just make sure it is Hyatt resolution quality pictures. You do not want your pictures to be fuzzy. This is so important that I need to say it again you do not want your pictures to be fuzzy. Fuzzy equals no no sales!
Summary on the Back
People need to know what they will get in the book
Now it’s time to talk about the back cover and where you put your summary of your book. If you want to include a short bio of yourself you can most definitely do that. However, remember there is a section of your book where you’re going to have a full detailed biography about who you are and what you do. I would say if the bio on the back of your book cover should be 200 words and be more specific to the topic of your book. For example, if you write a book about 7 steps to 6 figures than your summary about yourself could be about your journey to six figures. Let me give you an example…
Taurea decided to write this book after being able to experience one of the best opportunities in her life. Having been an entrepreneur for more than 15 years she learned the principles of how to be unsuccessful as well as being successful. It wasn’t until her 10th year and business that she learned the principles of success and how to truly become a six-figure earner. Now her mission is to show other entrepreneurs all over the world how to make six figures in their businesses.
As you can see this is a very short biography really just describing the topic subject of the book. The next part of your text on the back cover should explain to the reader what they can expect as a result of reading this book. It’s also very important that people are attracted to what looks easy so make it easy for people to read the back summary. Add bullet points and break your paragraphs up so they can easily read them. Also be sure that you let the reader know as a result of reading this book… or in this book you will…
Remember this is always a fact, People buy when you help them to solve a need.
Make it easy for you to be contacted
The final element that a lot of book Educators don’t really talk about is having your contact details on your cover. You want to have your social media contact as well as a website on your cover. Remember and I have to keep saying this that 70% of most people will not read your book however if your cover looks great and your title pops, people will still want to follow you. make sure you make it easy for them to do so. I would also recommend for your website instead of it just going to an information page, make sure that when they do visit this site that there’s some way to capture the visitor’s information. You literally have a few seconds when somebody visits your website to capture their info. Don’t just send them to a website that you’re not doing that. And everything that you do as an entrepreneur your goals should always be to collect what I like to call “coins and contacts”.
This is actually something that I learned from one of my books the value of having your contact information on it. A fellow entrepreneur saw my book on the counter top of one of my customers. Of course, the cover popped and so did the title. Now the customer did not want to give my book to this person so they flipped the book over so my contact information and they contacted me. Not only did they contact me but also sought me out to be a guest on their radio show. They never read the book but the fact that I had a book make me an expert and they wanted me to be on their show. Good thing that I made it easy for them to contact me because if I would have only had it inside the book who knows if they would have opened the book to find it. Don’t make it hard for people to get in touch with you and don’t make it hard for you to capture people’s information.
I hope that you found value in this article period if you did please leave a comment below and if you have anything else you would like me to right on don’t hesitate to also let me know. I look forward to your success as being a successful self-published entrepreneur. May you use your book to leverage your business and build multiple streams of income.
